How to Search Civil Dockets
Mississippi Electronic Courts, called MEC, is the official electronic access point for participating courts. Rankin Circuit and County Court sit in the Twentieth Circuit system. Rankin Chancery appears in Twentieth Chancery. Public users need a non-attorney MEC account. Figure out the court first. A civil case could live in Justice Court, County Court, Circuit Court, or Chancery Court.
A case may not show up online. When that happens, go to the office that keeps the record. The Circuit Clerk holds Circuit and County Court filings. The Chancery Records Office holds Chancery filings. Justice Court has its own civil and small-claims staff. One countywide request will not automatically reach all of those court custodians.
- Use MEC public registration when the civil case may be in a participating Rankin County court.
- Select the Rankin County court, then search narrowly with the caption, case number, or the information shown in a notice.
- Record the court, division, case number, filing date, and the last event shown on the civil docket sheet.
- Ask the clerk holding that file about inspection, copies, certification, older records, or restricted documents.
Note: A search result is only a lead to the record. It does not promise that every case document can be downloaded.
Rankin County Civil MEC Access
MEC lets public users open docket sheets, notices, and documents in non-restricted cases. That applies when the court participates. Registration or renewal costs $10 per year. The terms also impose a $0.20 charge per page that a search returns. A no-match search still bills one page, all on quarterly billing. Those fees reward a focused Rankin County civil docket search over a broad sweep by a common surname.
The Twentieth Chancery MEC CourtInfo page names Rankin Chancery as an MEC court. County records state that Chancery files and records have been entered in MEC beginning in 2013. For older material, ask at the clerk's office or check a legacy source. Do not rely on an electronic docket result alone.
| Access channel | Use for a Rankin County civil docket | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| MEC | Participating Circuit, County, and Chancery docket sheets and eligible documents | Account, billing, and restriction rules apply |
| Circuit Clerk | Circuit and County Court civil filings and copies | Confirm current fee and file availability |
| Chancery Records Office | Family, estate, guardianship, land, and equity records | Older records may not appear in MEC |
Note: MEC access does not turn a restricted Rankin County civil file into a public document.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A civil docket is an event record, not the judgment itself. Any Rankin County Circuit or Chancery case carries main fields. These include case number, division, filing date, party roles (plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent), complaint or petition type, service, motions, orders or judgment, costs, and document links.
A caption is simply the case title. It normally names the parties and their roles. Service entries track the delivery of legal papers. A docket may list an order or judgment entry. The precise language lives in the document itself. When exact wording matters, request it from the correct Rankin County custodian.
| Caption and parties | The case title and roles, such as plaintiff and defendant or petitioner and respondent. |
|---|---|
| Filing and service | The case opening and official events concerning service of process. |
| Motions and orders | Requests to the court and the court's recorded action on those requests. |
| Setting | A scheduled hearing, conference, or trial event, not necessarily the final outcome. |
| Judgment and costs | A result entry and any official cost information the docket makes visible. |
Rankin County Justice Civil Dockets
Rankin Justice Court handles civil matters up to $3,500. The county lists debt collection and replevin among its examples. Three deputy clerks staff the civil and small-claims department. For those matters, call 601-824-2665 and pick option 3. That counter is separate from the Justice Court criminal department.
Fees rise with the number of defendants. The county's official civil filing page lists $75 for an affidavit or open-account action with one defendant. Two defendants bring $85, three bring $95, and four bring $105. Then each additional defendant adds $10. A garnishment costs $60. A warrant of removal runs $60 plus $5 per defendant. Confirm the current filing instructions and fees with the clerk before submitting any civil paperwork.
The Rankin County Justice Court filing civil suits information page sets out these civil docket filing details.
The local filing material shows why a Rankin County civil docket search should start with the correct court and civil department.
Note: Confirm Justice Court's current civil filing amount and fee before submitting a Rankin County pleading.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
No single court holds every Rankin County civil docket. Justice Court takes smaller civil matters within its stated limit. County Court has exclusive jurisdiction over eminent domain, unlawful entry and detainer, youth court, and partition of personal property. It also carries specified concurrent jurisdiction. Circuit Court hears larger-claim civil actions. Chancery covers equity, family, probate, guardianship, commitment, land, and related matters.
That division drives access. A case involving a will, guardianship, divorce, land, or probate vocabulary belongs on a Chancery path. Circuit and County cases run through the Circuit Clerk. A land-record index helps with recorded instruments. It cannot replace a case-level Chancery docket search.
Note: The caption and court on a Rankin County notice are better routing clues. Do not lean on a broad subject label.
Rankin County Civil Court Overlap
Rankin County cases don't always fit in one box. County Court shares civil and criminal work with Justice Court, and it holds concurrent law and equity jurisdiction with Circuit and Chancery Courts up to $200,000. Circuit Court's own county description frames civil actions at $2,500 and above. So there is no single dollar line that sorts every case. The court, the caption, the subject matter, and the current instructions all steer a filing to its proper home.
That matters for a docket search. Keep the court name printed on the pleading or notice, because a Rankin County case that moves between courts changes its clerk and the path to electronic or counter access.
| Rankin County court | Civil docket context | Records channel |
|---|---|---|
| Justice Court | Stated civil jurisdiction not exceeding $3,500 | Justice Court civil staff |
| County Court | Exclusive and concurrent areas, including specified law and equity overlap | Circuit Clerk |
| Circuit Court | Higher-level civil actions and appeals | Circuit Clerk |
| Chancery Court | Equity, family, estate, guardianship, and land matters | Chancery Records Office |
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil setting on a Rankin County docket is a case event with a date on it. It might be a motion hearing or a status conference. It could be a family or probate hearing, a trial, or another event the court defines. Read a scheduled notice as scheduled or pending. That label is not a disposition.
When the fields are there, keep them all. Note the event label, the court, date and time, location, judge, case number, and source.
Rankin County's Circuit, County, and Chancery courts offer no open public searchable page for live calendars. Documented routes include MEC docket sheets or case-event views. The clerk office is another, along with the official state judicial directory or calendar materials. Before treating a missing or moved entry as a final ruling, verify the setting with the clerk responsible for that court docket.
Rankin County Chancery Civil Records
Chancery records in Rankin County cover a wide stretch of life: divorce, family matters, adoptions, probates, guardianships, conservatorships, commitments, land, and civil matters. The Rankin County Court Records division files the initiating documents and summonses. It handles motions, judgments, and related materials too. Chancery Court sits at 201 North Street, second floor, Brandon, MS 39042. The listed office phone is 601-825-1649.
Older Chancery material is a different story. A no-result in MEC does not mean no case exists. You may then need the Chancery Clerk's office. A legacy lookup or a copy request can also work. For recorded land instruments, search the official land inquiry by grantor, grantee, instrument type, book and page, date, or instrument number. A land index is not a court docket, so treat the two as separate tools.
Note: The online land index is a convenience tool only. The Official Records Index in the Chancery Clerk's office controls.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
MEC public access opens docket sheets, notices, and eligible documents in non-restricted cases. Court rules and policy govern all of it. The MEC Privacy Policy makes a key point. The judiciary is a separate branch. So the Mississippi Public Records Act does not apply to it the way it applies to executive or administrative public bodies. A general county public-information request won't bypass that and unlock restricted court files.
Plenty can still be withheld or redacted. Sealed filings and juvenile matters qualify. So do protected personal identifiers and confidential medical or mental-health information. Documents restricted by court order and material covered by another confidentiality law count as well. A public docket index may even show a case number while its documents stay unavailable. If a clerk denies a request, ask for the stated exemption and consult the official procedure for the relevant custodian.
Mississippi access limits: Sections 25-61-11 and 25-61-12 of the Mississippi Public Records Act preserve other confidentiality laws and protect defined personal information. Court policy and the clerk holding the Rankin County file control a particular access request.
Note: A civil docket entry can stay public even when a linked Rankin County document remains restricted.
Rankin County Civil Docket Terms
Civil docket labels tell you what happened. Not all of them mean the case is over. Use the court's own wording, and when a term controls an important deadline or filing decision, ask the Rankin County clerk for the underlying record.
- Caption
- The case title, normally naming parties and their court roles.
- Replevin
- A civil action seeking return of property. Rankin Justice Court lists it as an example.
- Garnishment
- A process directed to a third party to reach property or wages as authorized.
- Certified copy
- A clerk-authenticated copy, generally subject to an added certification fee.
Quote a term straight from the official docket when you request a Rankin County civil record. If the label alone is unclear, ask the clerk for the underlying filing.
Rankin County Civil Clerk Routing
Send a request to the clerk who actually holds the file. For Circuit and County Court civil filings, that's the Circuit Clerk at 215 East Government Street, Brandon, MS 39042. Mail goes to P.O. Box 1599, Brandon, MS 39043. The phone is 601-825-1466. The county's location information lists weekday hours of 8:00 to 5:00. Chancery records sit in the Chancery Records Office, 201 North Street, second floor, Brandon, MS 39042. The phone is 601-825-1649.
Chancery copies by mail have their own routine. Identify the document. Enclose a check or money order payable to the Rankin County Chancery Clerk. Add a self-addressed stamped envelope too. Spell out the case number, court, date range, record type, desired format, inspection or copy preference, and whether certification is needed. Don't fire a broad civil request at a general county office and expect every court file to be searched.

Rankin County Civil Search Costs
The Circuit Clerk fee sheet sets a $10 per-name civil records search and a $161 fee for a new civil case, complaint, or petition. Copy work adds up fast on the public-record request form: labor at $20 per hour, photocopies at $1 per page, certification at $1.50 per document, plus possible actual costs for materials, postage, review, or redaction. Expect research charges even if no record turns up or the record is exempt.
| Rankin County civil access item | Observed charge | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MEC registration | $10 annually | Public account, with payment timing rules |
| MEC search result | $0.20 per page | No-match search has a one-page charge |
| Circuit Clerk civil search | $10 per name | Confirm current scope and fee |
| Circuit Clerk civil new case | $161 | Fee sheet figure, subject to current schedule |
Note: Court fees and copy rules can change. Confirm the current amount and accepted format with the clerk before you pay.
Rankin County Civil No-Match Results
A blank result from MEC is rarely the last word. The search may have pointed at the wrong Rankin County court. The case may predate the electronic files. The caption may not match the party name typed in. Or the record may simply be restricted. None of that means the dispute never made it to court. For chancery work, the county puts records from 2013 forward into MEC. Anything older usually takes a trip to the clerk's office. A legacy lookup or a copy request can also serve.
Match the method to the record, too. A case docket search wants a caption, case number, court, and division. A land-record search works off grantor or grantee. Instrument type, book and page, date, or instrument number also work. Keeping those two systems straight matters. It keeps a Rankin County civil requester from mistaking an instrument index for a full case history.
